Buying guide

We all need our beauty sleep, and the quality of our sleep is greatly influenced by the quality of our bed and mattress. Whether you like a firm or soft mattress, a memory foam or a pocket sprung mattress, an Ottoman or divan bed frame, our buying guide is on hand to give you the information you need to make a good choice for your body shape and sleeping style.

From the firmness to the size, as well as the material your bed/mattress is made from, there are lots of features to take into account when it comes to finding the perfect bed for a comfortable night of rest. There's no exact time frame for when a mattress should be replaced, but there are some clear signs to let you know that yours is past its best. If you are waking up tired, sore, or have taken to sleeping elsewhere in the house then it is probably time you looked for a new bed or mattress.

MEMORY FOAM

Using space-age technology our memory foam mattresses are made from high quality polyurethane. It is both highly energy absorbent and soft. Memory foam moulds to the body in response to heat and pressure, evenly distributing body weight. In addition to protecting against impact, these properties make memory foam very comfortable. Memory foam is used in many products including our luxury mattresses for it's great benefits in relieving pressure points, preventing pressure ulcers, back problems and enhancing your sleep like never before.

Memory foam provides great pressure relief to your body by distributing your weight across the surface. In many other types of beds, pressure points are created as the heaviest parts of the body like shoulders and hips support a majority of the sleeper’s weight. By eliminating pressure points, you will toss and turn less at night reduce daytime pain as well.

Memory foam provides excellent support for people suffering with back problems as it is specially designed to relieve the body of stress and tension while you sleep. One of the greatest advantages of memory foam is its ability to conform to your body and keep your spine in natural alignment, rather than forcing it to assume a linear shape.

Memory foam provides no motion transfer, meaning you will not feel any movement if pressure is applied on a different part of the mattress. Many couples find memory foam to be ideal because they can finally sleep soundly with their partner. If one person moves or gets out of bed, that motion will not disturb the other.

Memory foam is known for its great durability and is known to last much longer than the average spring mattresses. Good quality foams like ours can last for 5 to 15 years depending on the construction, and with proper maintenance should exceed use many years beyond the warranty period.

Take a look at the list below to see whether a memory foam mattress might be a good choice for you:

- Do you experience back and/or joint pain?

- Do you have issues with pressure points/pressure sores?

- Do you toss and turn a lot at night?

- Do you find coil-spring and pillowtop mattresses uncomfortable?

- Do your partner’s movements wake you at night?

If your answer is YES to any of the above then you may benefit from buying one of our memory foam mattresses.

LATEX

Latex mattresses are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Latex is a natural material that comes from the sap of the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) and possesses elasticity. It is this elasticity which allows the mattress to conform pleasantly to your body shape. Those who have slept on a latex mattress report that it feels wonderfully soft at first touch, but 'firms up' as your body settles deeper, giving your body full support. It is no surprise then that many people with musculoskeletal ailments such as back pain find relief with a latex mattresses.

The first of these benefits is its unique balance of soft comfort with proper support for your spine. A latex mattress is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould and bacteria without the use of added chemicals, and this benefit appeals to many people.

The natural open-cell structure of latex provides excellent air circulation, this is further enhanced by pinhole patterns purposefully created during manufacturing. This allows for a mattress with good breathability, resulting in comfortable sleeping temperatures.

An additional benefit of a latex mattress is the no motion transfer property which means that it does not transmit movement easily, so if you sleep with a partner, you won't feel their movements on your side of the bed. Superb body pressure distribution properties also means that latex mattresses are frequently recommended by medical professionals such as chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths.

Last but not least, latex is an environmentally friendly option and a healthy choice for the eco-conscious consumer, they are one of the most highly durable mattress types available. If you are going to be purchasing a mattress, it makes financial sense to purchase a very long-lasting one. Our latex mattresses are made to the highest standards and with proper care and maintenance should last over 10 years.

HIGH DENSITY FOAM

High density foam is a type of polyurethane foam that is tightly packed together. This high density makes it much easier to provide comfortable padding for mattresses. Foam density of this type also tends to hold its shape with greater efficiency, allowing it to return to normal dimensions when any object is lifted from the surface of the foam. One of the best ways to understand how high density foam works is to consider a mattress that is manufactured using the product. The structural foam used in the mattress allows it to conform to the contours of the individual sleeping on the mattress. At the same time, the foam provides support that allows the spine to remain in a natural position, eliminating stress on the back and neck. As a result of this cushioning effect, the individual is able to enjoy a deeper and more recuperative sleep, and is more likely to awake feeling rested and refreshed.

Unlike other products, high density foam has the ability to regain the original shape shortly after any weight is lifted from the product. For example, a mattress made with this foam provides ideal support for the sleeper, but quickly reverts to its original appearance after the individual arises. Such mattresses will hold their shape for many years, providing a longer period of active use than mattresses using other types of materials.

In terms of cost, products made with high density foam tend to be competitive with products manufactured using other materials. Often, the foam products can equal or even exceed the life of products made with other materials. For this reason, high density foam used for padding or as the main material in mattresses is both practical and cost-effective as well as being affordable and offering long-term service to consumers.

POCKET SPRING

Pocket springs are the foundation of high-quality mattresses and are a fundamental component that any mattress buyer should fully understand. Pocket springs are normally concealed in layers consisting of plush padding, housed in separate fabric pockets. These springs are vertically positioned and distributed throughout the inside of the mattress, pushing against the sleeper’s body weight. Each spring will support your body on its own and won’t transfer it to another part of the bed. These mattresses are supportive, often covered with luxurious material, thereby giving it an affluent stylish look. Its cushioning effect provides great level of comfort that will help you relax. Now you can be sure of having a sound sleep and wake up the next sunrise completely refreshed.

A pocket spring mattress has springs that work independently, and provide support and cushioning to both you and your partner, whilst preventing you from rolling together and disturbing your sleep. There are many companies manufacturing these spring mattresses in huge numbers, since it has become the preferred choice among consumers. You can browse through a list of these mattresses in all shapes, colours and sizes on our website.

Pocket sprung mattresses can also now be found widely with Memory Foam fillings rather than the traditional cotton, wool, polyester or other fibrous substitutes.   Commonly the fibrous filling above the spring will flatten and wear out before the springs themselves and you will start to feel the springs poking through.    With a memory foam filling this will not happen, as it will be one single piece, with most memory foam proven to recover even after 10 years worth of use. This is a Hybrid of the two most beneficial and popular mattress types.  The two work extremely well together, complimenting each other's characteristics.  Whilst the pocket springs move to the contours of your body, the memory foam works with it to both support you in a perfectly natural position, as well as relieving your pressure points allowing you to reach a much deeper sleep pattern from a more restful night's sleep.

OPEN-COIL SPRING

Open-coil springs (also known as Continuous Coil, Miracoil or Coil Sprung) mattresses have been in production for many years and are still a very popular option. They offer fantastic value for money and come in a range of different comfort levels, from orthopaedic through to softer grades. The majority of the support comes via metal coils that run through the width of the mattress. Retailers will often refer to the ‘gauge’ of the mattress– which indicates the thickness of the wire used for the springs. The lower the number, the thicker the gauge, which typically creates a firmer mattress. A 12.5-gauge mattress will be firm and provide plenty of support, but if you’re looking for something a little softer go for a 13.5-gauge which still offers plenty of support. A high-gauge rod edge is very important in open-coiled mattresses, as it extends the sleeping surface and helps the mattress to retain its shape, reducing side sag.

Open coil mattresses provide excellent support and are used for most orthopaedic mattresses due to their firmness. They tend to have more ‘give’ than pocket sprung mattresses, and are lighter and therefore easier to turn. The advantages of an open coil mattress is its ability to evenly distribute the weight across the mattress and its rigid construction allows the mattress to be sat on, for example in a day bed situation, where we recommend the Joseph Backcare Supreme Orthopaedic Coil Spring Mattress

Open coil mattresses are extremely popular and durable mattresses and are a more affordable option for many people. They are not only suitable for the master bed but are ideal for spare bedrooms and children. An increasingly popular use of open coil mattresses is in mobile homes, caravans or boats, where they are a versatile option. We can supply open coil mattresses in any shape or size.  Investing in an open-coil mattress with an inbuilt memory foam topper can further enhance your sleep by giving a superior level of extra comfort, please see the full range of open-coil mattresses in our web-store and grab yourself a bargain today.

OTTOMAN BEDS

Ottoman beds are a stylish but practical alternative to traditional divan beds and frames. If you have limited room for bedroom furniture and storage is restricted you may want to consider buying an Ottoman bed frame. Ottoman beds are a great choice if you need more storage because they come with a very reliable hydraulic gas lift system. You can easily access the storage area by raising the platform base of the ottoman bed. Lifting the platform is achieved without any effort thanks to the action of hydraulic gas lifts that are connected to either the side or head end of the base making the storage space easily accessible.

An ottoman bed offers the majority of its interior space for storage. A double ottoman bed which is 135cm wide and 190cm long will then allow you to use roughly the same surface for storing bed linen and personal objects. You can also choose a compartmented storage area if needed for a better organisation.

We at bedworld.net specialise in upholstered ottoman bed frames as these provide a more contemporary feel. Dark faux leather fabrics give a sense of sleekness, whereas lighter colours such as white or cream allow natural light to be reflected much more efficiently, giving a sense of space. Fabric choices give a softer and more welcoming message, which can easily be accentuated by soft furnishings and complimentary drapes.

Think about your existing bedroom decor or perhaps the look you are aiming for, if renovating the whole room. The whole point of ottoman beds is that they offer the same degree of style that traditional bed frames are capable of, coupled with their unmatched degree of storage capability.

Furthermore our ottoman beds comes in the divan style set up, these include the solid fabric bases that divan beds have. This can be an ideal solution if space is limited. This is because divan bases sit flush with the mattress along the edges and no extra space needs to be taken into account on the length and width to ensure a decent fit.

Ottoman beds are available in a wide choice of different styles, materials and sizes so that you can rest assured you will find the design that best suits your needs and preferences, bedworld.net offers a wide selection of storage ottoman beds. CONTRACT BEDS

If you’re using a mattress or bed for commercial use then the product needs to comply to specific UK Fire regulations. The following information is a quick guide to aid you, it's always recommended that you should always conduct your own research before purchasing any product.

The term ‘Crib 5’ can also be known as ‘Source 5’, this relates to furniture or furnishings which can include beds and mattresses that have been tested and passed the UK Fire Regulations 1988.

It’s important to note that the tests do not make a bed or mattress completely fireproof, the test is designed to dramatically reduce the risk of ignition thus potentially saving lives in the process.

A product is legally compliant when it has passed the following tests:

BS EN597-1 (Cigarette)

BS EN597-2 (Match)

Crib 5 – BS7177

The tests are generally carried out by the manufacturer of the product before it reaches a retailer, you can easily tell if a mattress or bed has been passed because it will have a crib 5 label.

The quality of all our contract beds are reinforced by compliance with UK government health and safety legislation and fire department requirements and composite tests – all our contract beds conform to BS 7177 (Medium Hazard) Ignition Source 5 (Crib 5), which are amongst the strictest tests in the world. Bedworld.net works closely with the manufacturers to ensure that all products exceed the requirements for use in the hospitality industry.
